Lighthouse Mystery
HOLA Y'ALL!!!
The mama dogs from the "Rio Vacacaca" (cow poop river) rescue got spayed today!!! The vet says the scars on Storms shoulder are from either scalding water or hot oil.
Y'know, when Mom rescued these girls, the bigger one, "Storm," was laying on a cardboard box with 4 of 5 puppies.
The smaller adult, "Fiesta," was standing against a fence with the 5th pup.
When Mom got them home she put them in the crates like she found them. But the 4 pups in the crate with Storm soon raised a ruckus wanting to be in the crate with Fiesta.
Mom checked and realized that Fiesta had milk for the pups but Storm didn't. So Mom just figured Fiesta was the mom of the pups and maybe Storm was Fiestas mom.
But something else we noticed, over the next few days, was that while Fiesta did all the feeding, Storm did all the mothering. She'd lick and clean the pups and snuggle with them. Fiesta really had no time for them. She was busy bouncing around the yard and playing!!!
Once the pups were weaned Mom figured we needed to get the adults to the vet to be spayed as soon as possible.
As it turned out...now here's the mystery part....Fiesta WAS pregnant!!!!! Just barely..... but definitely pregnant....with EIGHT PUPS!!!!
Now this is a dog we thought was the mother of 6 week old pups. How can she be pregnant?
And the other dog has no milk, so how could SHE be the mother to the 5 pups? And how come Fiesta had milk?
Anyway, both girls are doing fine and sleeping off their anesthesia......but Mom is still tryin' to figure it out!!!
Anybody out there got any ideas?
Puzzled tailwags,

Hmmm.
It seems to me that you greatest concern would be:
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH 8 MORE PUPPIES ?!!!

Sadly, we did not know she was pregnant until the spay was underway. So the 8 pups were aborted.
She couldn't have been over three weeks into the pregnancy. They were VERY tiny.
In January we had a Great Dane mix mother with 11 puppies - before there were 14 but 3 died already - which was in very bad shape as well as their babies. The owner did not care so we stepped in and helped the dog family. At least we got the owners to spay the mother dog. This was when the pups were about 8 weeks old. And the female was already pregnant again - with 8 more pups!!! Imagine: 22 puppies possible within a quarter of a year...! Guess, this is not a miracle, this is part of nature?!?
