Soldier is Gone

It breaks my heart to have to say that Soldier is gone. He was euthenized this morning. His infection had flared back up over the past two days and his leg had begun swelling badly. When we dressed the leg last night we noticed more swelling and more pus around the pins. His pelvic was continuing to deteriorate and was popping and cracking anytime he tried to move around. When the vet saw him this morning her face fell. She said he was in a lot of pain now from the infection and her recommendation was to put him down. He had no appetite this morning and for the past two days has been looking weaker and weaker. That is why I had not taken any new photos. His eyes were becoming weaker and weaker. He has not missed even one dose of antibiotics but I guess the infection was just too strong. The swelling and infectio9n had begun to spread up into the shoulder. Our hearts are broken. We did everything we could. At least he knew love and caring before his life ended. Thank you to all who have prayed so hard and sent healing thoughts. May God bless you all.

Today we had a remarkable sunset. I like to think it was a gift from Soldier. I call it Soldiers' Sunset.

4-21-10 Update on Soldier

Soldier is feeling some better but is still very weak. The infection seems to be clearing up somewhat but not completely.
He is unable to stand for very long at a time. His pelvic is very weak in it's fractured condition and of course he has only one good leg on the front so it make is very difficult for him to balance.
He did have a small bowel movement today.
Our American vet says it is still not hopeful though because it takes the pelvic several weeks to heal and if it heals back wrong he can end up not having control of his bowel and bladder functions.
He is eating better but still not like we want him to.
These are photos I took today after we dressed his front leg. That bone is still not showing any signs of healing.
We are still trying to decide what is best for him.
Please keep saying prayers and sending healing thoughts.
He is the SWEETEST of the sweet.

Hola Y'all!!
We've got an injured kid here at Lighthouse. He came in March 30th. Mom and Dad found him on the side of the road. He had been hit by a car. He has a broken front leg, a fractured pelvic, infection, and some bruises. The vet did surgery on him and put a pin on the leg. He is not eating much and is not doing well. Please say prayers or send healing thoughts for him okay? He's a real sweet kid. We named him Soldier.

Of course the big money will most likely go to one of the large shelters in the U.S . but Frances Jones, director of Lighthouse, hopes to be able to win $1,000.00 for the "international" shelter with the most votes. Right now a Mexican shelter is leading the way but Frances isn't worried as long as Lighthouse can stay in second place. "They are offering two $1,000.00 grants for the international shelters with the most votes." says Jones. "The Mexican shelter is WAY ahead. They're trying to win the $10,000.00 grant. They're offering a Caribbean vacation for two of their voters if they win. We can't afford to do that. All our money goes to the animals needs. But if we can just hang onto second place we'll still win a thousand dollars. That would mean so much for the animals we care for." Frances has been doing rescue since she was four years old and she and her husband of 42 years have continued that work ever since they married in 1968. That's 60 years if anybody's counting! Together they take in street animals, bring them back to full health, teach them about love, have them spayed or neutered and then find loving homes for them. Sometimes there are as many as 25 animals running in and out of their home and small finca. The Jones' don't believe in caging or kenneling animals except for a few days quarantine when they first arrive at the shelter. Once they prove to be non-contagious they have free run of the house and walled finca and are treated just like a private pet. Sleeping on the couches and beds, relaxing in the Jones laps and receiving the love they have never experienced. No animal leaves until it is happy, healthy, and incapable of making any more puppies or kittens. They have even built a clinic room in their home in order to offer low cost castration clinics for people who cannot afford to pay a regular castration price. Good Times At Lighthouse

Hola Y'all!!

We've had a GREAT couple of weeks here at Lighthouse!!! We got to meet Aunt Karen and Uncle Frank!! AUNT KAREN MAKES HOMEMADE TREATS!!!! WHOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! They have a really cool cat named Merlin


and a little girl dog named Sissy!!



She's a real cutie. She's not quite used to hangin' with so many perros but she's getting there. A couple more visits and she'll be putty in my hands. Y'all KNOW how charmin' I can be!! I think she's a little scared of ol' big mouth Laika.
Aunt Karen helps Mom give us baths!!!!!

They came up again today to meet the new pups who got dumped Wednesday. Mom and Dad were dressed and ready to go to a St. Patty's Day party when a woman showed up with two puppies she said were dumped on her road. She owns a restaurant and she said her cook saw them first, told her, and she ran out to the road and picked them up seconds before a big bus came over the hill.




Mom just took them in the clinic and put them in a big soft fleece in one of the kennels until she could get back from the party. They seem pretty healthy but they have a little bit of mange. They're pretty cute kids. Mom says they are Schnauzer mixes about 6 weeks old. We named 'em Patty and Marty.

AND GUESS WHAT!!!! Our clinic refrigerator died and Mom lost LOTS of her dog and cat medicines and a lot of expensive tests!! She was really sick about that.
Well today a good friend, Jose, donated a little refrigerator he was not using!! Now all we gotta replace are the meds and the tests!!

And we got to meet some MORE really nice people!! Art and Caroline, some people Mom met on Costa Rica Living, went and got the refrigerator for us and brought it to us!!!! Mom gets lost every time she goes to Alejuela so Art offered to get it for us!! How's THAT for really nice people!!!

Bingo and Annie are still here and needing homes. And we think Super Mom Lisa has decided she's stayin'. There's a new kitten too. Her name is Mariah.



We're still in 2nd place in the shelter challenge and that's ANOTHER good thing!!! It's just been a really good couple of weeks!!! Y'all be sure to keep votin' ok? We need that grant to replace some of the meds and stuff.
